The upcoming Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) surveys and their contribution to galaxy evolution

The physical processes that govern how galaxies form and evolve across cosmic time is one of the main open questions to be addressed in theupcoming decade. Astronomers in the past decade have made excellent progress with charting the evolution of star formation rates and stellar mass across cosmic time via large optical and infrared surveys. A new era of discoveries is nearly upon us with the advent of the new surveys that will be starting to use the next-generation radio telescopes which will allow us to further our understanding of the physical processes that are occurring in the interstellar medium. The upcoming Widefield ASKAP L-band Legacy All-sky Blind surveY (or WALLABY) and the Evolutionary Map of the Universe (EMU) all-sky radio continuum survey using the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) expects to detect half a million HI galaxies and 70 million radio continuum sources. In this talk, I will also highlight the data challenges and the alternative methods that we are currently pursuing to maximise the science output of such large datasets.
